Kihaus Folk Music Festival in Rääkkylä, Finland.  Karelian and Finno-Ugric music meet music from other parts of the world at Kihaus Folk Festival in early July. The role of Kihaus Folk Festival is unique among Finnish folk music festivals. It takes place in Northern Karelia, very near the Russian border, so it is easy to understand that the Karelian folk music and the folk music and folk dance of other Finno-Ugrian people have been the dominating themes at Kihaus during all these years. The home of Kihaus is Rääkkylä, which is a small municipality with about 2700 inhabitants in Eastern Finland, 450 km to northeast from Helsinki. The geographical situation links together the Karelia from the both sides of the border, i.e., Finnish Karelia and Russian Karelia. Address:  Kihaus Folk Music Festival, Kinnulantie 14, FIN-82300 Rääkkylä, Finland, Phone (011-358) - 13 229 901,  Fax: (011-358) 50 307 0539, Email:  kihaus@kihaus.fi , Webpage:  http://www.kihaus.fi

Rørosmartnan – Røros Market
– Røros, Norway – Music & Dance festival associated  with historic winter street market gathering.  "From a royal proclamation in 1853:  'From 1854 on there shall be held in Røros a market, which shall begin the last Tuesday of February and  last til the following Friday…',  and since that time there has been a market in Røros every single year."  Dances afternoons & evenings, sales of everything from art & handcrafts to sausages & tractors.  70 – 80,000 people expected. Webpage: http://www.rorosmartnan.no   Tel:  72 41 00 00;   email: Post@Rorosinfo.com; snailmail: Postboks 123, N–7361 Røros.

from Mary Barthelemy (about Rørosmartnan 2010)
The annual winter fair in Røros - Rørosmartnan - takes off at 12:00 noon Tuesday Feb. 16 in 2010. And gains height and speed during 5 days of dance, music and spontaneity among culture enthusiasts as well as normal people. Dance day and night. And if you are insecure about your gammeldans-technique or one of the turns in Røros pols, come and learnby doing to music played by good Røros musicians and their eminent friends. Final dance is Saturday nite ... into the wee hours ... and if you plan right, you can make it (I think!) to Blefjell by evening with stories to tell... and a Røros-experience you'll never forget :-)

This is not a camp, but truly a traditional fair with plenty of traditional music and dance energy. Always starts on the next-to-the-last Tuesday in February. Lodging is always a challenge, but normally works out. I'm willing to help serve as a friendly local contact point for more info... Mary Barthelemy maryb@online.no

Karin Brennesvik's Telemark Winter Experience
Sunday - Friday (Feb 20 - 25)
The first part of the week will be back at Ble Fjellstue www.blefjellstue.no/pages/english.html , a lovely mountain lodge just up the road from fiddler Hauk Buen in Jondalen. Anyone who has been there can tell you what a special place it is: hundreds of kilometers of x-country ski trails are accessible right outside the door, wood-fired sauna and hot tub, and the most incredible traditional Norwegian food that you'll find anywhere. Start making room now for the delicious home-baked breads.

We'll have classes and parties with many of Telemark's best dancers, singers and fiddlers:
Hauk Buen, Olav Sem, Karin Brennesvik, Kenneth de Gala, Tom Løvli, Arnhild Brennesvik, Eivind Bakken, Erling Halling ... to name a few ... and a special visit from Valdres fiddler Jan Beitohaugen Granli. We will also have the opportunity to dance with some of the other groups in the area.

We're working on plans for craft sessions. Details to follow at a later date.

Friday - Sunday (Feb 25 - 27)
At the end of the week, we'll travel back to Kongsberg for Kongsbergmarken, the annual fair that dates back to 1633. There is a craft, silver and knife show at the Bergverksmuseum (Norwegian mining museum), a tivoli in the old part of town, and concerts, dance parties and kappleik (the music and dance competition) at the local folk museum.

Price: Register before December 1st and pay only 7000 Norwegian kroner. After December 1st, the fee is 7500 NOK. To register, go to our webpage www.TelemarkWinterExperience.net (still under development) and click on the appropriate link.

The price includes all housing, food and transportation, beginning and ending at the Kongsberg train station. Entry fees to all kappleik-associated events during Kongsbergmarken (Friday concert/dance, Saturday kappleik and dance).

Not included: transportation from Oslo to/from Kongsberg, ski rental, alcohol, craft supplies (depending on what we do).

Check out our Facebook page www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=183741983495 for lots of great pictures from previous years.

Nordlek is a Nordic folklore festival that is arranged every third year. It is arranged in each of the Nordic countries in turn. It attracts literally thousands of dancers and musicians. For one summer week there are people in colorful costumes everywhere, dancing, playing and enjoying themselves. Next Nordlek will be arranged in 2012 in Steinkjer, Norway. For more information see  http://www.nordlek.org.  English web page: http://nordlek.no/?lang=en

Comments from Alix Cordray: Unlike in previous years, you can register individually online. There is no longer any requirement to register through a member organization. The registration deadline is April 15. Paying the general registration fee is sufficient - you do not need to register for any special events. Included are dance classes every day and an evening dance in 4 halls. However, you might want to buy additional tickets for a concert or two. Participants learn one one dance from each country prior to the festival (and musicians learn one tune). Media are available for download from the Nordlek site. Alix has created a free iPhone/iPod app that contains all the media (video, audio, sheet music, and instructions).
